Amazon.com Product Description The AT&T SL82318 DECT 6.0 Corded/Cordless Phone with Three Handsets and Answering System offers unsurpassed range, sound quality, and security, thanks to its use of DECT 6.0 technology, a newly available frequency band that does not suffer from interference from home appliances and wireless networks. The system comes with three handsets; you can transfer calls between handsets, and all three handsets can be off-hook simultaneously. If you need to expand, the base can support up to 12 separate handsets. A built-in digital answering machine system records messages on microchips for reliable performance, instant access to messages, and the ability to selectively save and delete messages. The phone supports caller ID and call waiting. The Speakerphone is built right into the handset, making it more convenient than having to sit by the base as many other Speakerphone systems require. You can select from various ringtones, and the phone system is wall-mountable.

Lightning Fast Shipper, Phones Exceeded Expectations March 4, 2010 John A. Bates (Ferndale, MI) Like many of you reading this, I spent a lot of time searching for the right product and scouring reviews until I finally settled on these phones. We haven't had a "hard wired" phone in fifteen years, so I wanted to be confident this was the phone to meet our needs into the future. Our cable company made me a great offer on their digital (Internet) phone service, and Amazon provided just the right product.
The AT&T handset system (SL82318) arrived quickly - three days before the new cable modem - so I had plenty of time to set everything up, peruse the manual, pick locations for the handsets, charge the batteries, etc. Previous reviews were correct about not really needing the manual - setup was quick and easy and fairly intuitive. I only broke out the manual to learn a bit more about storing numbers in the "Directory", then I was off to the races.
Once the new cable modem arrived and was configured, the real fun began. I've been calling family all over the country ! These units were just what we needed for our "empty nest" home - two handsets in the home, and one in the garage. Build quality was questionable, at first, until I accidentally bounced a handset off the concrete driveway from a height of about three feet. Not only did I not lose the call, there was hardly a scratch on it, so I just picked up my conversation where I left off (you gotta love these modern plastics). Don't let the light weight and slim design fool you - these phones seem to be pretty tough.
The sound quality is better than adequate, especially considering the signal is traveling via the Internet from a base unit surrounded by other electronics plus an amplified Apple Airport wireless network. There's no static, no interference, just good sound quality from an absurdly compact handset. I will echo what others have stated - the speakerphone function is superb.
Another reviewer remarked about the size of these being comparable to a TV remote control, which is a pretty fair description. The blue backlit keypads are easy on the eyes, the function buttons are pretty well laid out, and all the components seem to play well with others. For someone that doesn't need or want a gazillion features, this fits the bill. Our digital phone service includes all the usual bells & whistles, so some of the phone's features are redundant for our particular circumstances, while others compliment the features offered by the cable company.
We've only been using the phones for a few days so I cannot vouch for longevity, but my preliminary analysis is - - - BUY these phones and don't look back. An excellent value for your dollar, shipped fast and easy. Win, win, win.
Must have for large or small homes !!!!! March 4, 2010 mjd This cordless phone is the best phone we have ever had. The range is wonderful and the sound clarity is unsurpassed. We have a large home and can now walk from one end to the other without any static or being dissconnected. This is the first cordless phone that has ever been able to do so. The answering machine part of the phone is crystal clear and very easy to use. Would recommend for anyone!!!!
Unbelievably ancient interface, features; low batt life March 2, 2010 dosboss This is incredible. I bought this phone to replace a AT&T 2440 2.4GHz phone I have had for 10+ years. Great phone, just getting old and no-one makes batteries for it anymore. And it interferes with my wireless router, and the microwave interferes with it :). You can still find the phone listed on Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/AT-2440-Cordless-Telephone-Metallic/dp/B00005094F .
I bought a new AT&T SL82318 phone set (3 handsets) with the expectation that AT&T's technology had progressed in the cordless telephone market in the 10+ years between the model I have and this one. I was completely wrong. Opening the manual for the SL82318 was a shocking trip down memory lane. Except for the addition of an answering machine and the DECT 6.0 (1.9GHz) frequency use, this phone has the *exact* same internal digital interface features as my old 2440 I have sitting right next to it - although they are couched under a *slightly* different menu system (and I mean slightly), and a much more confusing button layout to access them.
Oh, wait, it does display the (exact same) information on a 4 and 1/2 line b&w LCD screen instead of a 2 1/2 line one - even if the newer one only uses the first 2 lines 90% of the time. And the back light is now 'cool blue' vs. the older 'cool green'. Wow. I would have thought that the geniuses at AT&T could come up with some better features and interface given the time between the two, and a slight expectation that during that same time span their entry/competition in the mobile phone market might have had *some* technology bleed-over, but it seems that the boys with the death-star logo only like designing things once - and darn it that's going to be good enough for anyone.
The manual states 5 hours of talk time on a fully charged battery (16 hours of charge recommended). I have yet to test the full measure of that, but the Panasonics, Unidens, and V-Techs sitting next to it at the store all advertised their battery life on the packaging, AT&T did not - probably because all the others had advertised battery life of 8 hours or better talk time, including the V-Tech's impressive claim of 17 hours(!). Good to keep you in the dark about these things. And - get this - my old 2440's claimed talk time *in the manual* is 6 to 8 hours on a full charge (which BTW charging takes only 8 hours on the older phone). 10 years and you lost 3 hours use time? Even with all the advancing technology in electronics low power usage and battery breakthroughs?
Is this phone something you cooked up 9 1/2 years ago and are just now getting around to selling?
I knew I should have bought the Panasonic. Knew it.
Wish I Had Tried It In A Store First February 21, 2010 John The phone functions as advertised but poor contrast makes much of the lettering on the handset and the base unit difficult to read. Same for the illuminated display. I've seen Panasonics that are much better. I miss the caller ID voice announcement feature but I know it was missing when I bought the phone. I needed a non-intrusive wall mount capability which unfortunately restricted my phone options.
Priced right, does the job, some nice touches, but not perfect February 21, 2010 G. Parson (Utah) I really can't quibble too much with this phone system. The price was extremely competitive. The calls are clear, and its been reliable for the several months we've had it. Also, features like the answering system were easy to set up and use - a major improvement over our previous cordless phone/answerer systems.
However, there are a few annoying little things that take away from the overall experience. As others have noted, the handsets just don't fit the hand well. Not sure if they're too light or too slim, or exactly what the root cause is.
Also, the keys on the handset a bit "off" - maybe a bit mushy? Not enough tactile feedback? Once again, not a major problem, but a minor annoyance nonetheless.
So, if you're looking for a generally good inexpensive setup, and you're not too picky - go for it. You'll be satisfied.
